The Crop Problem

Every designer knows the pain. You have 200 product images, all different sizes and aspect ratios. You need them all to fill a 2:1 landscape frame in your template. Crop them too tight, and you cut off the product. Crop them loose, and you get ugly letterboxing. Manually crop each one? That's two hours of mind-numbing work.

Smart Objects and SO Iterate make batch processing possible, but they still need an intelligent cropping strategy. If you just stretch images to fit, you distort them. If you use simple center crop, you often miss the subject. You need a method that:

How Golden Fill Works

Golden Fill is Xlaypand's intelligent crop mode. Instead of blindly center-cropping or stretching, it analyzes what's actually in the image — identifying subjects, focal points, and background regions — then positions the crop using golden ratio composition so the result looks intentionally composed, not algorithmically processed. The crop is applied non-destructively as a Smart Object transform, so you can always switch fit modes or revert later.

Fallback behavior: If the image has very low contrast (solid colors, minimal detail), Golden Fill automatically falls back to center crop. Your batch won't fail; it just uses a safe default.

Comparing Fit Modes

Xlaypand offers five fit modes for Smart Objects — Cover, Contain, Stretch, Golden Fill, and Native Replace — so you always have the right strategy for your content. Cover fills the frame with a simple center crop; Contain preserves the full image with letterboxing; Stretch distorts to fill; Golden Fill intelligently positions the subject using composition analysis; and Native Replace keeps original dimensions for vectors and pre-sized assets.

Real-World Use Cases

Magazine Hero Images

A digital publishing company produces weekly lifestyle magazines. Each week, 50 photo submissions arrive from freelancers. All images are different aspect ratios and compositions. The magazine's cover template requires a 3:1 hero image. Every image must fill that space perfectly, with no distortion and no letterboxing.

With Cover mode, some images work; others have the subject cut off. Golden Fill analyzes each photo, finds the subject, and positions it optimally. The analysis does take longer per image than a simple Cover crop, but it still saves hours compared to manually cropping each image by hand. The result: hero images that look professionally composed, not algorithmically cropped.

E-commerce Product Photos

A fashion retailer processes 10,000 product photos per season. Photographers shoot products on white backgrounds, but with natural lens falloff and lighting variations. Some products are centered; others are slightly off-center due to manual shooting. The retailer needs consistent 1:1 square crops for their web gallery.

Golden Fill ensures that exterior shots frame the home's best angle, kitchen and bathroom photos focus on appliances and fixtures rather than random walls, and bedroom photos highlight the room's size and features without cutting off furniture. The algorithm doesn't require manual cropping hints or per-image configuration — it analyzes the content automatically, and the listing cards look uniformly polished.

Performance

Golden Fill adds some processing time per image compared to simpler fit modes, but it's still dramatically faster than manually cropping each image by hand. High-contrast product photos achieve near-perfect compositions, while lower-contrast images may occasionally fall back to center-crop. In testing, Golden Fill produced professional-quality crops on the vast majority of images without manual intervention.
